Intracranial pressure monitoring
Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is routinely used to enhance the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury patients.
An ICP monitor can either be inserted via a burr hole bolt or directly at time of craniotomy. The ICP monitor is a sophisticated probe that is laid on or in the brain, it is connected and calibrated to a dedicated recording device at the time of operation. ICP monitoring allows the neurosurgeon to determine the state of brain while a patient is being ventilated and unable to communicate. The ICP measurements are used in combination with many other clinical indicators to tailor their critical care.
